The process

Glass fusion classes include all of the supplies necessary to create up to three fused glass pieces. The small class size allows for personal instruction in glass cutting, fusing theory, and finishing. The classes last about 2 hours.  You’ll choose the initial design elements of color and shape and see how the fusing process transforms the original design into a unique pattern of multicolored glass.

The first step is to choose the colors that you’d like to use. There is a rainbow of glass to choose from as well iridized and dichroic glass. You’ll also decide  and cut shapes of glass to assemble in an initial design.

Your assembled pieces will then be fused in the glass kiln. Glass melts at about 1450º F. The original design elements of color, shape, interact with the number of layers of glass at fusing temperature. For example, the sharp, straight lines of the cut glass will flow into smooth and rounded shapes while layering adds dimension and interest.  The pieces will also change size as the layered glass flows into a single fused layer.

It takes a few hours to bring the glass to fusing temperature, to anneal it for strength, and then to cool. So you’ll return to the studio to pick up your fused glass  and to add the finishing touches that turn your  pieces into earrings, necklaces, or pins.

Here are examples of pieces before and after fusing, enlarged to show detail of how the glass flows as it is fused.  Changes in shape and size make the final pieces more exciting.
